Miniatures Project: Pathfinder Society Characters: Charr

This is the figure for my 13th Pathfinder Society character Trade Prince Charr. Even though Charr is a low level character he has friends in high places - which he made by doing favors for them. As a result he has earned the title Trade Prince much earlier that is normally possible.

Charr, an Ifrit Oracle of Flame
Charr is all about the fire, you might even say is obsessed with it. He is both an Ifrit - a human with a touch of an elemental fire creature's blood in his family tree - and an Oracle of Flame - a Divine spellcaster devoted to the Mystery of Flame. He also has some martial training (1 level of fighter) to make him a Dex based melee combatant with a wide variety of cool fire powers.

Side View
This character is only second level so far, but he is really fun to play. I am looking forward to playing him more - and having a special miniature made specifically to represent him on the table.

The figure is the Jalahandra Warrior figure from Reaper. I just placed it on a square wood base and added some texture.

Paint Table Saturday VI

Another week has gone by so it is time for another paint table update!  This week I have some work in progress shots of a few of the figures that I have been working on. The main paint table is still pretty cluttered, but I have been trying to clear it off by painting some of the figures that have been hanging around.

The main table is still pretty cluttered
You can see some bits of the table, but there are still plenty of figures to paint!  With the Arctic Blast of cold air hitting the US this past week it has been too cold to use any spray primer so I have been using brush on primer which means not working on the larger models on the table.

Paint Table Saturday V

Hi There! I have missed two Saturdays so I wanted to get this post in even if it is a day late. I had family staying with me from out of town (Hey Dad!) which was great but cut into my time for painting and modeling in a big way.  I put a bunch of Orks together for Orktober but I didn't acutally get around to painting any of them!  I will do another post to update the progress of the Orks soon-ish.

Paint Table Saturday 11/08/2014
So the biggest development around the paint table is that I acutally got down to painting some miniatures!

More Orctober Goodness

While working on my Ork Warbuggies for Orctober, I ended up pulling out all of my Ork models and putting a bunch of stuff together.

Ork Kommandos
I found 10 metal ork heads with gas masks.  I combined these with a bunch of  metal and plastic stickbomb bits to make a unit of 15 Ork Kommandos.  These guys look different enough from regular Ork Boyz that it should be easy to tell them apart.

Terrain Project: Autumn in Ithillian Hills

I have been working on a few other projects lately, but there are still a few items I want to do for my Autumn in Ithillian terrain project.  Today I have a couple of terrain pieces that were very quick to do because they are just adaptations of commercially finished terrain to make them match the Autumn theme of the table. Not every single piece of terrain has to envolve a ton of work, there are a ton of nice pieces you can buy that are already finished or almost finished pieces.

King's Cliff
The first piece is the King's Cliff from a German website called Ziterdes. This is a hard foam hill that comes painted and flocked with grass. I just added the autumn leaves.

Paint Table Saturday IV

It is time again for Paint Table Saturday Monday.  I am a couple of days late posting this, but I took these pictures on Saturday, Honest!

Paint Table Overflow
So I have been working on my 40K Orks for Orctober. Working on the first squad of Warbuggies got me to pull out my cases of Ork models and I found a bunch of stuff that needed to be assembled. So the Orks ended up jumping ship from the hobby table and invaded this nearby tray table where I put a bunch of them together.

Paint Table Saturday III

It is time again for the now weekly Paint Table Saturday update.  This week I made some really good progress on my Warhammer 40K Ork Vehicles for Orctober Fest. I am done modeling/converting the five Wartrakks and Buggies and they are ready for primer. You can see them there on the front edge of the hobby table.

Paint Table Saturday 10/11/2014
Under the Table 10/11/2014
Next up is some green stuff sculpting for one of my PFS characters and well as painting PFS characters and the Ork Vehicles. Thanks for reading, see you next week.

Orctober: Ork Wartracks and Buggies WIP

Hey there,
I am back today with an update on my Ork vehicles that I have been working on for Orctober.
You may remember from last week that I had the basic vehicles done but needed to add both crew and weapons to the buggies and tracks.

A peek at the work in progress

So a quick read of the Warbuggies entry in the current Ork Codex shows that a unit of Warbuggies has a maximum unit size of five. This is fortuitous since I have five models in progress. Also there is an option to upgrade the Buggies individually to Wartracks, sorry Wartrakks, for five points each. Being Trakked lets the vehicle re-roll dangerous terrain tests.  For weapons, the Trakks or Buggies can be armed with a twin-linked Big Shoota or a twin-linked Rokkit Launcha.  Also a Warbuggy can be upgraded to a Skorcha for 10 points which gives it Trakked and changes the weapon to a Skorcha flame weapon.

So going by the models my unit will have one Warbuggy with a twin-linked Rokkit Launcha, one Wartrakk with a twin-linked Rokkit Launcha, two Wartrakks with twin-linked Big Shootas, and one Skorcha.

Mutants from Mother Russia

The mailman just brought me some figures today that I had ordered online a few weeks ago. These guys are the "Weapons Team" from My Way Miniatures. These are not licensed miniatures but I am sure you will recognize them from somewhere...

I didn't realize until after I placed the order that they would be making the trek all the way from St. Petersburg Russia to me here  in Colorado. So I have been waiting impatently for them to show up for a few weeks.

Turtles under plastic
I just snapped a few quick picks of these figures. I didn't want to take them out of the bags until I am ready to glue them together because they have some tiny parts that could very easily be dropped and lost forever.

Terrain Project: Red Planet - Bridges

Hello again readers.  Today I have another entry in my Red Planet terrain project.  I have several bridges today, both for vehicles and foot bridges. The first one is the Pegasus Hobbies Technobridge, a sturdy bridge that is easily wide enough for a land raider to drive accross with room to spare.

Heavy Duty Bridge
I really like this model. It comes in heavy duty dark brown plastic just like the Pegasus Gothic Buildings if you have seen those.

Disclaimer: The little blue guy is not mine. I barrowed one of my friend +Tim McKnight 's Ultramarines to use for scale in these shots.

Even More Weird Shaped Dice

Gamers, especially RPG players, are no strangers to multi-sided or "Polyhydral" dice. I recently* did a Kickstarter to fill in more dice in the range between the d4 and the d30. The standard RPG dice set contains the following dice: four-sided (d4), "normal" or six-sided (d6), eight-sided (d8), two ten-sided (d10) one of which is numbered as tens (10, 20, etc), twelve-sided (d12) and a twenty-sided (d20).  The two ten-sided (2d10) dice can be rolled together to generate a number between 1 and 100, this is called a d100 or percentile dice.

*Not so recently actually, I found this post exiled in the drafts folder just waiting to be published on the blog! :(

The thirty-sided (d30) has been around for a while as well. Why? No one knows!  The only time I have seen one used is to throw at a player who is being a jerk! (d30s are pretty heavy)

Expanded Dice Set
So in the picture above you can see there are some additional dice to the standard ones I mentioned above.  First there is a d3 (you have the naming convention down by now right?) but this one doesn't really count as a new type of die since it is just a d6 numbered 1 to 3 twice.

Then there is the d7 - yeah an actual seven sided die. This one is super weird. More about it later.

The set also includes a d14, d16, d18, d22, and d24! What am I going to do with all these amazing dice? Um, probably nothing since no game actually makes use of them yet. But the important thing is ...they exist and they are mine!   I don't wanna hear any sarcastic comments from minis gamers unless you actually think you will be able to paint all the minis you own before you die. RPG players buy dice like minis gamers buy figures.

So back to the d7, this one is weird because of the odd number of sides. Most dice have an even number of sides so that when the die lands on a flat side there is also a flat side facing up. When this d7 lands, because of ...geometery and stuff, there is a edge facing up instead of a flat side. Here is the weird part, there is still a number on the "top" of the die because the numbers actually wrap around the edges instead of being on the middle of a flat side.

Thanks for reading!  The DICE GODS command you to leave a comment!  :P

Miniatures Project: Pathfinder Society Characters: Ru-Sateph

Today I am sharing the figure for my Pathfinder Society character Ru-Sateph, the Risen. Ru-Sateph is a priest of Pharasma the Goddess of Death and Rebirth.

Ru-Sateph, Servant of the Lady of Graves
The figure for Ru-Sateph is Hanseth Dimguard, Cleric from Reaper Miniatures.

Purple is good for brooding.
I really like how the purple cloak came out on this figure. I painted it light gray and then used multiple layers of purple wash to build up to the dark purple color.

Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Terrain Project: Red Planet - Rusted Out Manufactorum

So here is another piece of terrain for my Red Planet project. The Red Planet project is a set of sci-fi terrain for Warhammer 40,000 that is a Mars-like planet with a corrosive atmosphere that makes everything rust at an accelerated pace.

I call this building the Rusted Out Manufactorum because it is made from the GW Manufactorum Set. Original right? :)

Paint Table Saturday II

So this is my second entry for Paint Table Saturday. You may recall from last week that the first item on the todo list was to get organized so that I had enough space to get some work done. It may not look like I have made much progress but I have. I actually have another desk upstairs that was in a simliar state. So I have been working on getting everything in one spot and organized.

Organized?  Getting There
Also I didn't show this last week, but there was a bunch of stuff under the table as well. That stuff is pretty much squared away until I have a chance to work on it.

More Stuff Under The Table
So what did I actually get done this week in terms of modeling and painting?  Well no painting, but I did start on some Warhammer 40K Ork models for Orctober.

Thanks for reading.

Orctober Fest

So there is a thing called Orctober! The concept is pretty straightforward model and paint some orcs during the month of October. I saw this over on Gingerbhoy's Painting Projects  and decided to join in on the green goodness.Although in my case it will be Orktober as I will be doing some models for my Warhammer 40K Orks.

So diving into my box of all things Orky I have spent the evening starting to put together some Ork Wartracks and Buggys.

Work in Progress on some Ork Buggies and War Tracks
I have made a good start but I still need to add some more drivers and weapons. I will need to consult the latest codex to see what options are available. I also need to track down one more small tire - the right front track is missing one on the driver's side.

Thanks for reading!  If you are doing stuff for Orctober feel free to post a link in the comments.

Miniatures Project: Pathfinder Society Characters: Roland

Here is the figure for Roland Cross my third Pathfinder Society character. Roland is a delver, a specialist in disarming traps and breaking into ancient tombs and vaults.

Roland Cross, Pathfinder Delver Specialist
This is a example of when you (meaning me) should just put the mini down and stop tinkering with it. I was a lot happier with the face at one point, but I kept "improving" it with shading until he looked like he had one of those orange spray-on tans. I probably repainted his face about four times total. Now I think about stripping the model and repainting it, but the character is already 10th level and Pathfinder Society characters get "retired" at 12th level so I am not sure it is worth it.

Miniatures Project: Pathfinder Society Characters: Godric

This is the miniature for my Original Pathfinder Society character, Godric. Long time readers of this blog have probably seen this miniature before as I painted it several years ago and have made a few posts about it before. As one of my current projects I am painting figures and posting the stats of all my Pathfinder Society characters.

Godric
The figure for Godric is the Bertok, Barbarian figure from Reaper Miniatures. I added the sheild.

Paint Table Saturday

So this is my first contribution to the Paint Table Saturday Group - even if I technically missed it by about an hour.  After about 3 months inactivity due to my wrist my painting and modeling table has accumulated a lot of clutter. First order of business it to clear enough space to get some work done.  Also it is time to fold some laundry!

Gone and Back Again

So about three months ago in June I was just getting back into posting on this blog in a regular fashion again. Then I abrupting stopped posting anything. Sadly this was not a first in the history of this blog which has been on again, off againt at best. Unfortunately, this time it was not just me being lazy or getting distracted by work or other things.

In early June I fell and suffered a pretty severe fracture to my right wrist. It was bad enough that I had to have surgery to correct it. Now after surgery, a titanium plate and six screws and three months of physical therapy my wrist is more or less back to normal. My range of motion is almost back to 100% but I am still working on recovering the strength in both my wrist and my grip in the right hand.

Since the experts say all blog posts should have a picture here it is. Sorry if you are squeamish. This is from about a week after surgery.

Just before I took the stitches out.
So I have obviously recovered enough to type and use a mouse and I am ready to try my hand (ha! see what I did there?) at painting again. So expect to see some more posts start to come out from me on a regular basis again.

Terrain Project: Red Planet - Pumping Station

Hello there readers.   So as I posted the other day I am working on a new terrain project called Red Planet. This is a set of terrain for Warhammer 40K but could be used for any Sci-Fi game.  So the idea is a Mars-like planet with red sand/dust everywhere. The buildings will be mostly industrial since no-one would really want to live there due to the harsh environment. The corrosive atmosphere also causes the exposed machinery to rust at an accelerated pace.

I will also be rebasing my original 40K army, the Imperial Fists to have red sand bases that will match this terrain.

The front of the Pumping Station
This is the first of two larger pieces that I have already completed. I call this one the Pumping station due to the tubes and pipes on the reverse side.  This building is built mostly of the parts from the GW Manufactorum kit, but I bought a whole Imperial City Sector* so there are most likely a few bits from the other kits mixed in.

*The original Imperial City Sector I bought when it was first released was like the one in the link but with x3 more of everything. One of those rare limited time deals from GW.

There is more stuff after the jump.

New Terrain Project: Red Planet

So this will just be a quick post to announce that I will be starting a new terrain project that I am calling Red Planet.  It will be science fiction based as you can probably guess and will use some terrain kits from the Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000 line. I will be working on this as I finish up my other terrain project, the Lord of the Rings themed Autumn in Ithillian table.

Rusted Out Manufactorum
This project has a bit of a head start as I already have a couple of pieces finished.  Here is a look at the Rusted Out Manufactorum piece that is already completed.  I will follow up soon with a post that has the work in progress shots of this piece and some of the other completed pieces.

Post a comment to let me know what you think or if you have suggestions about what type of terrain pieces would be good to include on a Red Planet table. Thanks for reading.

Thunder Lizard!

So this T-Rex is another prepainted toy that I found at Hobby Lobby at the same time as I picked up the octopus from last week. As this guy already had a pretty decent paint job, I just whipped up a quick base for him.

Rawr! T-Rex is hungry!
This guy is on a 3"x3" base so he will count as a huge creature for Pathfinder or D&D.  The base is just some painted Gale Force 9 fine grit with static grass and some clump foliage.

Terrain Project: Autumn in Ithillian Updating Older Pieces

Okay so the first set of pieces for this project I did from scratch. If you count using plastic kits as "from scratch" I guess. I know there are some terrain purists out there who definitely DO NOT.  However some of the plastic kits available now are just too cool not to use. But never fear my purist friends I have made my fair share of truly scratch-built terrain (see here for my scratch building "street-cred" =P) and I am planning what I hope will be a super-cool scratch-built center piece for this table.

I am sure there was a point in there when I started. Right! Non-scratch-built-stuff.  So I had a bit of Lord of the Rings terrain before I started all this and it was mostly built from the old GW Lord of the Rings terrain packs so it matches the new pieces.

Some existing terrain pieces that are getting an update.
In the back there are two ruined buildings on 6"x6" bases, one with a detached corner for more versatility. In the left front you can see a full set of the statues and broken columns from a terrain pack.  In the right front there are two unpainted statues from the Ruins of Osgillitath set and an extra broken statue from the terrain pack, also unpainted.  The unpainted pieces I will keep on hand and work into some of the other upcoming pieces. The rest I will be updating with the "Autumn" look.

More after the jump.

Terrain Project: Autumn in Ithiliian First Pieces Finished

Okay so I have finished the first set of terrain pieces for the Autumn in Ithillian table that I am doing. Since it has been such a long time since I started this thing, I will just remind everyone or let any new readers know that this project was inspired by my Rangers of Ithillian army and the display board I built for them for a tournament a few years ago. Basically I wanted to do a whole game table (4'x6') of terrain that would be like that display board - or at least give the same look and feel as the display board. You can read about that here.

The Gatehouse
Here is the finished Gatehouse with clump foliage and autumn leaf scatter added. This was the last step required to finish up all of these pieces.

A closeup of the Statue at the end of the Gatehouse
I like how this little path by the statue and doorway turned out.

Terrain Project: Autumn in Ithillian Update 3

Hi There!
I have recently picked up working on a terrain project that I started over a year ago back in early 2013.  Earlier posts on the Autumn in Ithillian Project can be found here. Unfortunately due to my gamer ADD this project was in limbo for quite a while, however I have come back to it and have made a good bit of progress on the new terrain pieces for the project.

Ruins WIP
Added static grass to the nearly finished pieces
In the above photo you can see the seven new terrain pieces that I have been developing for this project. Here I have added static grass. All that is left to be done on them is to add the clump foliage and fallen autumn leaves.

There are a more photos after the jump.

Release the Kraken! .... or Something.

tap, tap, tap  Is this thing on?  I am breaking radio silence here, do not be alarmed.

Okay it is not really a Kraken, just a giant Octopus. This is a prepainted toy that I found at Hobby Lobby and thought would make an excellent monster for Pathfinder.  I just made a quick base with some sand to define it's size for the game. Being on a 4 inch base it should count as a "gargantuan" creature.

Fancy a swim, chum?
There are some more photos after the jump.
