Pathfinder Rogue Work In Progress

Hello Internet!

Wow it has been a little while. I just realized I have not made a post here in about four months. Well you know how it goes, work has been crazy, blah blah blah.

Today I picked up my paint brushes for the first time since May, so I thought I would post a few pics of the results. I figured I would jump back into painting in a small way and get some quick things done to build up a sense of momentum. So I am going to be working on a few RPG character figures.  The first is a miniature I use for my Pathfinder Society rogue character, Roland Cross.

Roland Cross, Work In Progress
Sorry that the lighting in these shots is so bad, it was late and I didn't have my painting lamp handy. He is about 2/3rds done I would say with mostly details like his many leather straps and touch up work to finish.

Tyranids: Converted Mycetic Spores WIP Part 1

Okay so I wanted to do some Mycetic Spores for my Hive Fleet Scorpius Tyranids Army. For some reason when I think "Tyranid Terrain" I always think of egg shapes. Now Mycetic Spores are not technically terrain, but they are very terrain-like once they hit the table. So the idea for Mycetic Spores I have had percolating in my head for a while has been to make them like giant versions of the eggs from the Aliens movies.

Also I have recently cleaned off my hobby table at home enough to do some larger projects. I decided to do a bit of a how-to article on this project. It will have to be at least two parts since I didn't get finished last night.

Did I mention this particular project was going to be done on the cheap? Just in case GW comes out with some awesome models at a later date. So here it is:

How To Make Your Own Inexpensive Mycetic Spores
Part 1

Styrofoam Eggs
The first thing you will need is some large-ish styrofoam eggs. I got these ones for $3.99 each at Hobby Lobby. I think these were the second largest size they had.

Scorpion-Spider Thingy

"Oh scorpion-spider thingy, what are you?  Are you a scorpion or a spider?  All I know is you came out of a crack in the floor and stung Sir Bartemous on the ass. He died three minutes later, after turning you into a mostly green paste."
-- Ode to the Spider-Scorpion, by Tristan of Redoak

Scorpion-Spider Thingy
So I painted this little guy about an year ago and he has just been hanging out in a dusty corner of my hobby table ever since. I thought I would post a picture since I am trying to get more of my RPG figures up on the blog.

Tyranids: Parasite of Mortrex

I haven't had much time to post recently, but I have managed to finish painting my Parasite of Mortrex model. I think this counts as the first completely finished model for my Tyranids army, including finishing the base. I decided to go with an overgrown foliage theme since I remember reading somewhere that Tyranids seed a planet with spores to make all the plants grow at an accelerated rate to more easily collect the bio-matter.

I don't really have to much more to say about this guy since I already posted a couple of WIP posts here and here.  There are, however, a bunch more pictures after the jump.

Flying Eyeballs!

In between working on my Tyranids, I thought a would take a break and paint up something quick. I have had these little guys for a few years now. I don't recall the manufacturer or where I even got them.  But what the hey, the are Flying Eyeballs which are pretty damn cool in my book.

[edit 5/9/12] I just found out these are called Gotongi Demons and are part of the Das Schwarze Auge line by Ral Partha Europe. That is all.
[/edit]
A Flock (?) of Flying Eyeballs!
So I have eight of these things in total. Now that I have them painted I guess I will have to make up some D&D / Pathfinder stats for them. It seems like a no-brainer to give them some kind of gaze attack.  If you have any ideas for game stats, post a comment!

More pictures after the jump.

Tyranids 1,500 Point Army List

So this Saturday I have a Warhammer 40K game planned against my friend Nick, from Little Nicky's Gameroom. I will be playing Tyranids and Nick will be playing his Dark Eldar. This will be my first game of 40K in about an year and only about my 5th or 6th game with the Tyranids. So I hope to have fun and test out the rules for some of my new units like the Tervigon and the Parasite of Mortrex.

March Poll Results

So during the month of march I ran a poll asking about what brand of paint people prefer. Below are the results.

What brand of paint do you prefer?

Seems like the results may change a bit since GW just released their new line of paints today, but let's review anyway.

The Citadel/GW line seems to be the most popular through a combination of paint quality and corporate brainwashing (call it advertising if you like)!

Vallejo also as a good following, although I expected the percentage to be higher.

Another popular choice is mixing and matching paints from various brands.

The biggest surprise to me is the low number on the Reaper paints. I am actually switching to use Reaper as my primary brand although I still have a bunch of Citadel and P3 paints that I will use until they are gone.  I'm sure I will be picking up a few of the new Citadel line to try them out as well.

Discuss!

Tyranids: Infected Guardsmen WIP

So I have been working on my Tyranids lately and came up with this bit of fun. Obviously inspired by the Alien movies, I made up some infected guardsmen. The adrenal gland bit makes me think of an Alien Facehugger every time I look at it so I decided to go ahead and convert a squad of Catachans to be my infected guardsmen.

Infected Imperial Guardsmen
I converted a squad of 10 to start with. I think I may do some more after I see how they look painted.

Loot from the Old World

So I recently placed an order from Ziterdes, a German company that makes terrain pieces. They make some very nice terrain pieces some of which are perfect for Lord of the Rings. I ordered some things and this week got the first box of stuff.

King's Cliff

The first piece I bought is this awesome pre-painted hill called the King's Cliff. It is just about perfect for Lord of the Rings. It is made of hard foam and this is how it looks straight out of the package.

Tyranids Work in Progress

This evening I got a chance to work some more on my tyranids.  I was able to work on the flying Hive Tryrant, the Tervigon and my Parasite of Mortrex conversion. Basically, I have the green wash and the base coat of orkhide on the carapace completed on all of three of the models. If you are curious, I describe my paint scheme for Hive Fleet Scorpious in this post.

Tyranids: Parasite of Mortrex WIP

I was working on my Tyranids yesterday and looking through my bits box when I found a large pair of resin wings. These are the Ultraforge demon wings that I had originally purchased  intending to use them to make a Winged Hive Tyrant conversion. Well with the new plastic kit out, I don't need them for that anymore. Flipping through my codex I found the Parasite of Mortrex and decided to try converting my own version.

New Tyranids Work in Progress

I picked up the plastic Hive Tyrant and Tyrannofex/Tervigon kits this past Saturday. Today I had some time and started putting  the kits together.

Since I already have a metal hive tyrant that is walking, I opted to build this one using the flying option. He is armed with a lash whip and bone sword and scything talons, on his feet. I got him put together and primed with the necrotic flesh color I use for my paint scheme.

Guest Post: And Now for Rangers

I have begun to put together my second Lord of the Rings army. Not becasue I am bored with my first army - which is Galadhrim Elves (I still do love them), but because I simply wanted to try an entirely new game experience in both aesthetics and gameplay.

I have decided to build a 600-point Arnor force (Grey Company).

The Elves are shiny and disciplined -- the rangers are muddy and individualistic.
The Elves are a highly organized -- the rangers are opportunistic and unconventional.
The Elves are elite fighters that can stand toe-to-toe with any foe -- the rangers must use more subtle tactics.

Cirith Ungol Army: First Steps

So this weekend I have have been busily assembling  all kinds of Lord of the Rings Models. Right now, I can happily claim that every Lord of the Rings Model that I own is assembled and ready for priming and painting. This includes the first steps towards my new Cirith Ungol tournament army.

Those first steps include 12 Mordor Uruk-Hai that needed shields. The plastic shields are from the GW Warhammer Fantasy Goblin line. The metal shields are from some Reaper Miniatures weapons packs.

Next up for the army are the 12 Mordor Uruk-Hai with Two Handed weapons. Technically they don't require any work, but with 12 figures and only 3 poses, I want to do some weapon swaps to give the illusion of more poses.

Mordor 600 Point Army List (Updated)

I had previously posted my 600 Point Cirith Ungol Army List. This is an updated version to conform to the warbands rules. Since all the Mordor lists have been combined into one list, this is now technically a generic "Mordor" army but thematically it still represents a force from Cirith Ungol.
600 Pts - Cirith Ungol Roster - Cirith Ungol Horde

This is the next army I intend to use for tournaments. I guess I better start getting them painted!

Eagles: Full Army

Blam! Here we are finally at the last post in this series featuring my Eagles of the Misty Mountains army. If you are still with me this far in, then thank you for sticking with me and you already know this is for the Lord of the Rings SBG by Games Workshop. Below is a shot of the entire army assembled together.

Eagles: Astrilmere

Hi there and welcome back to my series of blog posts showcasing the models in my Eagles of the Misty Mountains army. This is of course for Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game.  Today we take a look at an Eagle I have named Astrilmere.  Other posts on the Eagles can be found here

Astilmere, work in progress

Astrilmere has earned the title "The Silent Hunter" for his ability to stalk and strike his prey undetected. Here we see Astrilmere about to pounce on an unsuspecting warg.

Astrilmere, work in progress
Astrilmere is represented by the Giant Eagle figure from Ebob miniatures. The stone archway on the base is made from pieces of  GW's Lord of the Rings Terrain Pack and filled in with copious amounts of  putty. The warg is a standard GW Lord of the Rings warg and the base has been painted and decorated with static grass and some clump foliage.

Eagles: Throndil

Welcome back to my continuing series of blog posts showcasing each of the models in my Eagles of the Misty Mountains army for the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. Click here to find other posts in the series about the Eagles.

Throndil, Work in Progress
Today we are taking a look at a model I have named Throndil, the Troll-Killer. Descended from the ancient Eagle hero Throndor, Throndil is a fierce warrior.

Throndil, Work in Progress
Throndil is represented  by the Great Eagle I from Gamezone Miniatures. I have mounted him atop a piece of brass rod on the Dead Troll base from Micro Art Studio.

Terrain Time

I just wanted to see if I could embed a Flickr Slideshow in a blog post. So here is a slideshow of  my War Games Terrain Set on Flickr. These pictures are mostly works in progress of my terrain projects.

If this works I hope you enjoy it.

Gondor Warriors: Converted Citadel Guard

Citadel Guard are an interesting choice for a Gondor army. They have the Bodyguard special rule which allows them to automatically pass all courage checks as long as a designated hero is still alive and on the table. In my army lists I typically have them follow and bodyguard Cirion. The Bodyguard rule, combined with Cirion's own special rule Boldest of the Bold, which gives him +2 courage when charging models that cause Terror, makes for a group that can reliably charge terror causing models.

Citadel Guard can be armed with swords (hand weapons), spears or longbows according to the rulebooks. Unfortunately Games Workshop only makes Citadel Guard models with spears or longbows. Since I wanted to field them with swords, I decided to convert some of my own.

Eagles: Westrilan

Hi, welcome back to the newest post in a series spotlighting the models for my Eagles of the Misty Mountains army for the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. This is the fifth post in the series featuring an eagle I have named Westrilan. Click here to find previous posts in the series.

This young warrior spends most of his time hunting orc in the Rhovanion east of the Aerie.  Westrilan was among the first to answer Gwaihir's call to arms.

Westrilan is represented by the Great Eagle III figure from Gamezone. The base is made from half of one of the fallen column pieces from the GW Lord of the Rings Terrain Pack.

Gondor Warriors: Converted Osgilliath Veterans

Osgilliath Veterans are a nice choice for a Gondor army that uses either Faramir or Boromir. They have a special rule called Loyal to the Captains, that gives them a +1 to their fight value if they are within 6 inches of either Faramir or Boromir. Since my Rangers of Ithillain army is led by Faramir, I wanted to include some Osgilliath Veterans in my army.

Osgilliath Veterans Converted from Warriors of Minas Tirith
[edit: above picture added 2/6/12]

Now Games Workshop makes some perfect good metal models of the Osgilliath Veterans. The only problem is that they sell them three to a blister pack, 1 with sword, 1 with spear and 1 with bow. Since shooting a bow or supporting another model with a spear does not allow them to take advantage of their increased fight value when near Faramir, these are kind of lame choices.  I was only interested in fielding the veterans with swords.

Minas Tirith 600 Point Army List (Updated)

So if you play Games Workshop's Lord of the Ring Strategy Battle Game, you probably know that whole boatload (5) of new source books were just released for the game this weekend. These books don't change the rules of the game per se, but they do overhaul the army composition rules. Basically your army is now comprised of "units" called warbands. A warband consists of a hero and up to 12 warrior followers. For most armies this shouldn't pose a problem, but for horde armies that are 50 warriors led by 1 or 2 heroes, this is going to cause a major rework.

Isengard / Dunland Raiders 600 Point Army List

Here is an army list that I have been thinking about.  I am not sure if this is the final version of the list yet, but here is where I am starting from. I have all of the models for this list. They are ready to be assembled and painted. Unfortunately that means no pictures yet.

600 Pts - Isengard Raiders Roster - Isengard/Dunland Raiders

Hero (1#, 60 pts)
1 Lurtz, 60 pts (Hand Weapon; Orc Bow; Armour; Shield)

Uruk-hai Scouts (16#, 144 pts)
16 Uruk-hai Scout, 144 pts (Hand Weapon; Armour; Shield)

Uruk-hai Archers (8#, 72 pts)
8 Uruk-hai Scout, 72 pts (Hand Weapon; Orc Bow; Armour)

Feral Uruk-hai (9#, 108 pts)
9 Feral Uruk-hai, 108 pts (Hand Weapon; Hand Weapon)

Minor Hero (1#, 55 pts)
1 Dunlending Chieftain, 55 pts (Hand Weapon; Two-Handed Weapon; Armour)

Dunlending Bannerman (1#, 31 pts)
1 Dunlending Warrior, 31 pts (Hand Weapon; Armour; Banner)

Dunlending Warrior (6#, 42 pts)
6 Dunlending Warrior, 42 pts (Hand Weapon; Armour; Shield)

Dunlending Warrior (6#, 42 pts)
6 Dunlending Warrior, 42 pts (Hand Weapon; Two-Handed Weapon; Armour)

Dunlending Bowman (6#, 42 pts)
6 Dunlending Warrior, 42 pts (Hand Weapon; Bow; Armour)

Heroes: 2
Warriors: 52
Total Model Count: 54
Total Roster Cost: 596

Army Strengths:
- Uruk-Hai with Str 4 Killing Power! Yes I want to play a game with Str 4 troops.
- Feral Uruk-Hai with two attacks. I hope this will make up for the lack up spear support.
- Some 2 handed weapons on the Dunlending Warriors will be helpful against high defense targets.

Army Weaknesses:
- No spear support. This will be a new challenge for me, to play an infantry army without any spear support.
- No volley fire. My archery is split between Uruk-Hai and Dunlendings. I don't think I can combine the two types of warriors together to volley fire.

Eagles: Evandor

Welcome back to my continuing series of posts showcasing models from my Eagles of the Misty Mountains army for the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. Click here for more posts concerning the Eagles. I am about halfway through this series, but there is still a bunch of Eagles goodness coming down the blog pipe.

Evandor, work in Progress
This time we will be taking a look at Evandor, Guardian of the North Peak. At this point, I have exhausted all of the  official Lord of the Rings lore about the Eagles so I am creating my own.  As Guardian of the North Peak, Evandor is responsible for the security of the Eagles home, the Aerie, and is therefore seldom seen away from its borders.

Eagles: Gwaihir

Welcome to the next installment of the the series featuring models from my newly completed Eagles of the Misty Mountains army for the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. Click here for a list of posts relating to the Eagles. I will be covering all the models in this army in a series of posts over the next couple of weeks.

Gwaihir, Work in Progress
This time we will be taking a look at Gwaihir, the Windlord who is the greatest of the eagles during the third age of  Middle-Earth. Gwaihir is a friend to Gandalf and led Landroval and Meneldor to Mt. Doom to rescue Frodo and Sam after the destruction of The One Ring.

Eagles: Landroval

Okay I have recently finished my Eagles of the Misty Mountains army for the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. You can read my previous posts about starting the army here and the first eagle, Meneldor, here.  I will be covering all of the models in the army over the next couple of weeks.
Landroval, work in progress
Next up is Landroval, who is the brother of Gwaihir and was one of the eagles that rescued Frodo and Sam from Mt. Doom after The One Ring was destroyed. Landroval is represented by the Great Eagle II figure frome GameZone Miniatures. The base was constructed from a plain plastic base and one of the fallen pillar pieces from the Games Workshop Lord of the Rings Terrain Pack.

Space Marine 200 Point Kill Team Army List

200 Pts - Codex: Space Marines Roster - Kill Team Inflexible

Sternguard Veteran Squad (5#, 150 pts)
   2 Sternguard Veterans
          Bolter; Bolt Pistol; Special Issue Ammunition; Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour;
   1 Sternguard Veteran - Relentless
          Heavy Bolter; Bolt Pistol; Special Issue Ammunition; Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour;

1 Sternguard Veteran - Tank Hunter
          Missile Launcer; Bolt Pistol; Special Issue Ammunition; Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour;
1 Sergeant - Move Through Cover
          Power Weapon; Bolt Pistol; Special Issue Ammunition; Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour;

Fast Attack: Land Speeder Squadron (1#, 50 pts)
1 Land Speeder Vehicle (Skimmer, Fast); Heavy Bolter

Pre-Game Analysis:
Here is my Kill Team list that I will be using for tomorrow. The Land Speeder with heavy bolter should provide a nice mobile firebase. The Sternguard are expensive but provide a great balance of shooting and close combat. They can buy weapon upgrades without being a full 10 man squad like tactical marines and have 2 attacks base for close combat.  Relentless on the heavy bolter will allow him to move and shoot his heavy weapon.  Tank Hunter will provide a little extra kill power for the missile launcher. And move through cover should ensure that my power weapon toting sergeant does not get bogged down in difficult terrain.

Post-Game Analysis:
Well after playing yesterday this list seems pretty solid. I ended up with second place (out of four). And had 2 wins and 1 loss and alot of fun. The game that I lost I was assaulted on turn 1 by Grey Knights that all had power weapons so it is not surprising that I lost since this list is more of a shooting list.

Coming Soon: More Eagles, Firestorm Armada, HotT Lizardfolk.

Eagles: Meneldor

Just last week I have finished the Eagles of the Misty Mountains army for the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game that I have been working on for about the last six months or so.You can read this post from last  August when I had the idea to start the army. I am really happy with the way they turned out, so I am going to be showing them to one at a time in  a series of posts over then couple of weeks.

Meneldor, work in progress
First up is Meneldor, who was one of the eagles that rescued Frodo and Sam from Mt. Doom after the destruction of the One Ring. He is represented by the Games Workshop Giant Eagle figure. This is the one figure that I already owned and had painted when I started the army. I have remounted the figure on a section of brass rod so he is now flying up at an angle rather than level. The base is a Woodland Base from Ebob Miniatures.

2012 New Years Gaming Resolutions

So it is now 2012 and New Year's is the time for resolutions. It seems the game blogging community is no different, so I will join my fellow bloggers in recapping the previous year and laying out some goals for 2012.

Blogging
Well with only 17 posts in 2011 I didn't even come close to my goal of 1 post per week. However I am going to raise the bar anyway and shoot for an average 2 to 3 posts per week in 2012. I am going to try and accomplish this by coming up with some regular weekly features or types of posts. One of which I have already experimented a bit with - posting army lists every Sunday. I want to expand this past Lord of the Rings SBG and include some other games. I am not sure of the other types of posts to make regular features, but I want to include more painting posts and start doing more terrain posts.

Gaming
Anyone reading this blog in 2011 might reasonably assume that Lord of the Rings was the only game that I played. While it has been the game I most frequently played the last year it is not the only game. I have actually started playing some Firestorm Armada games in the last few months and just recently tried out a new game (for me) called Hordes of the Things with my friend Craig last week. I also want to get back into playing both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40K on a regular basis. In fact there is a 40K Kill Team event this Saturday at my local game store that I will be playing in.
